Top three supplements to take for pain relief and arthritis pain.
Our blog is coming out a little early this month as I did want to make an announcement on office hours.
We are going to be closed March 23rd at noon and reopen on March 29th at 8:00 AM. Our daughter Michelle will be getting married. Yeah for Michelle.
I get asked a lot about what natural supplements do I recommend and here are the ones for arthritis and pain relief.
Collagen
Collagen is the most plentiful protein in the human body. It's part of the scaffolding that keeps skin supple and supports the cartilage that acts like a shock absorber in the joints.
As you get older, this fibrous protein is much less abundant. "With time, there's a breakdown of collagen," says Nazanin Saedi, MD, associate professor and director of the Jefferson Laser Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Center in Philadelphia. "We have less than we did as children."
Some people will take collagen for their skin health but it has been shown to help with joint arthritis. The theory is that it is the building blocks of the joint cartilage and by having it within your system allows your joints to repair easier.
5-15 grams a day is good for joint health
Turmeric
Turmeric is a common spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa. It contains a chemical called curcumin, which might reduce swelling.
For wear and tear arthritis (osteoarthritis) taking turmeric extracts, alone or together with other herbal ingredients, can reduce pain and improve function in people with knee osteoarthritis. Turmeric might work about as well as ibuprofen for reducing pain.
1.5 grams a day is a recommended dose.
Glucosamine
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in cartilage — the tough tissue that cushions joints.
Glucosamine is used by the body to make other chemicals that build tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and the fluid that surrounds joints. Joints are cushioned by the fluid and cartilage around them. Taking glucosamine might increase the cartilage and fluid around joints and/or help prevent their breakdown.
Oral use of glucosamine sulfate might provide some pain relief for people with osteoarthritis of the knee. Some research shows that it may also help slow knee joint degeneration associated with osteoarthritis.
1500 mg/daily is the recommended dose.
Oops there is a fourth supplement that is very good for arthritis pain, Omega 3 fatty acids. This omega 3 is found naturally in cold water fatty fish like Salmon, trout, and halibut. It has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect on our bodies. Omega 3’s are high in the Mediterranean diet. The important parts of Omega 3 must include EPA and DHA.
4 to 5 grams per day is what is recommended for arthritis.
So these are my three, I mean 4, go to supplements of joint health and arthritis pain.
